Nail Prep + Safe Removal

If your set is giving “fresh out the salon” — this page is why. Prep correctly, apply clean, and remove gently so your natural nails stay strong, healthy, and ready for your next main-character moment.

Prep like a pro (the “stay-on” recipe)

Prep is 80% of the longevity. You don’t need a nail tech license — you need a little patience and the right order.

  • 1
Wash + dry hands Remove lotion/oils. Your nails should be squeaky clean, not moisturized.
  • 2
Push back cuticles (gently) This makes space for a smoother seal and helps prevent lifting at the base.
  • 3
Lightly buff the shine Just enough to remove gloss — not enough to thin your nail. Soft hands, Homegirl.
  • 4
Shape + clean edges File any snags, then dust off the nail plate (lint-free wipe is best).
  • 5
Dehydrate (key step) Use alcohol/acetone on a wipe. This removes invisible oils so your adhesive can actually do its job.
  • 6
Size check (before you commit) Dry-fit each nail. If you’re between sizes, go up and file the sides for a perfect fit.
Homegirl Tip
Apply when you’re not rushing. A calm set is a long-lasting set.
Pro Move
Avoid water for 1–2 hours after application. Let your set “lock in.”

Removal (no ripping. EVER.)

We remove press-ons like we remove exes: slowly, gently, and with boundaries.

Method A: Warm Soak + Oil (best for nail health)

1) Fill a bowl with warm (not hot) soapy water.
2) Add a little cuticle oil or olive oil.
3) Soak 10–15 minutes.
4) Gently wiggle from the sides — if it fights you, soak again.
5) Buff off leftover adhesive lightly and re-oil.

Method B: Acetone Wrap (fastest, do with care)

1) Apply petroleum jelly around skin/cuticles (protects skin).
2) Soak cotton in acetone and place on nail.
3) Wrap each finger with foil for 8–12 minutes.
4) Slide off gently. Don’t scrape aggressively — let acetone do the work.
5) Wash hands and oil immediately.

Aftercare: Keep your natural nails pretty

• Massage cuticle oil daily for 3–5 days after removal.
• If you’re taking a “nail break,” use a strengthening base coat.
• Hydrate hands (but only after you’re done applying/removing).
